Sens is a new venture from the Pourcel twins, adding to their already impressive list of global restaurants. Designer Imaad Rahmouni has created a contemporary space where ash grey carpets and furniture are set off by hints of red, from silk cushions to the felt of the pool table.

Like the classic furniture, the food is given a modern twist. The fusion food is inspired by the French colonies and spice routes of the Indian Ocean, where classic French cooking is transformed with more unusual ingredients, from fennel to kumquats.

But, although the restaurant boasts two Michelin stars (they took one away this year!), the sweet and sour combinations are often quite hit-and-miss.

A mezzanine-level cocktail bar and occasional club night, when tables are cleared and a DJ mixes until dawn, expands the Sens repertoire beyond simply dining. As with all the pricey places in the 8th, expect a slick-suited lunchtime crowd, and elegantly hip evening diners who enjoy posing and pouting in the funky atmosphere and striking décor

The crown jewel of the Costes family’s dining and nightlife empire, in spite of fashion-victim hotel guests and food that doesn’t stand up to other neighborhood options. Ground-floor lounge/resto one of the sceniest cocktail spots in town. Six neo-boudoir rooms, with varying dispensations of gilt, wood, and mirror, ring an open atrium that’s packed all summer and tented in winter. The whole overpriced blood and midnight-velvet affair is gorgeously fake, like much of the clientele, but fun nonetheless. Reservations recommended for drinks.

Russia’s most famous and successful restaurateur, Arkady Novikov heads an empire with more than 50 restaurants throughout Moscow. Arkady has put an individual stamp on each of his restaurants, enthused by different regions of cuisine. The man with The Midas Touch, his organisation includes supermarkets, florists and a 15 acre farm, with some 7,000 people in his employ.

It was back in 1992 that Arkady opened his first restaurant. Still run today on the same principles of quality food, service, design and atmosphere on which it was founded nearly  20 years ago, Sirena would lay the foundations for his empire.

Since those early days, Arkady’s name has become a byword for high-end dining in the city, with a clientele that includes everyone from Vladimir Putin and Bill Clinton through to Naomi Campbell. Indeed people go to a new Novikov restaurant simply because  he is involved.
