NURDAN LIKOS
“THINGS ON MY MIND …”
NOVEMBER 7th – DECEMBER 8th, 2012
Gallery Ilayda Tesvikiye is pleased to present “Things on My Mind” a solo exhibition by Nurdan Likos between November 7 – December 8, 2012. In the ”Things on my mind” series the artist, based on her own story, deals with the privacy / sins of a world that belongs to woman. Each woman has their own private world. Many woman can not admit some facts or circumstances to her closests or even herself. But can not prevent her thoughts. Some hides her sexual identity, the other her illnes, abortion, coupling with her friend’s darling, being beatened, or being raped etc… All of these are ignored or locked up to thoughts that otherizes the woman whose roles are mowned in a patriarchal society. These repugnant senses becomes reality when the person is head to head with herself in bed.
Young artist Likos’ life is just like every woman’s else. But she, unlike other woman makes visible her own realities with her paintings. She becomes herself while painting, becomes any woman who is watching when hung. She shares the moment of reckoning with herself in bed, on the street, sometimes in a undefined place with the tracers. She reveals her experienced sins or intimacy by the forms partaking in bedside or tiptoe. She prefers to make that with a metaphoric lanhuage rather than an open expression. Strengthened with the descriptions of the colors in compositions indicate that the thin line between life and death. Explores death and life through the relationship of men and women: sexuality, male, fertility, sexually transmitted diseases and the idea of death these leads. But the artist does not use a cold atmosphere or use dramatic language to tell these. Offers her sins with a sympathetic manner and tries to make fun of with life. For that reason she adopted a colorful and entertaining composition fiction.
Shortly, the artist tries to make the description of the world she herself lives in, in her artistic productions. Male and female, life-death, sex and diseases etc.. It’s good to say that Likos uses the concept of Ying Yang, known as the harmony of contrasts as a referance in her productions. Therefore, it is not a coincidence that she often preferred to use black and white color. (Ying and Yang is the name given to the stages of falling and rising. Opposite but complementary to each other. Can not exist without each other.)
Likos, Tracey Emin’s art in the 90s today, put it another confession to interpret geography and time period, rather than laying out in the lives of situations in which the paintings created by the colored forms by means of a rampant shares with audience. You can see the Things on Nurdan Likos’s mind till December 8th, 2012 at Gallery Ilayda Tesvikiye.
