Amsterdam

For other places with the same name, see  Amsterdam is a huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation listings — consider printing them all.

Amsterdam at night
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. With more than one million inhabitants in its urban area, it is the country’s largest city and its financial, cultural, and creative centre. Amsterdam is colloquially known as Venice of the North, because of its lovely canals that criss-cross the city, its impressive architecture and more than 1,500 bridges. There is something for every traveller’s taste here, whether you prefer culture and history, serious partying, or just the relaxing charm of an old European city.

Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important trading centres in the world during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. The city’s small mediaeval centre rapidly expanded as the Jordaan and the Canal Belt neighbourhoods were constructed; the latter’s cultural significance was acknowledged when it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded in all directions, with many new neighbourhoods and suburbs designed in modernist styles.

Amsterdam is not the seat of the government, which is in The Hague. Partly because of this, the city has an informal atmosphere unlike other capital cities its size. In fact, Amsterdam has a history of non-conformism, tolerance and progressivism, all of which come together in its liberal policies concerning cannabis and prostitution. Other attractions include the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Flower Market, Albert Cuyp Market, and the Vondelpark.

Old Centre
The mediaeval centre and most visited area of Amsterdam. It is known for its traditional architecture, canals, shopping, and many coffeeshops. Dam Square is considered its ultimate centre, but just as interesting are the areas around Nieuwmarkt and Spui. The Red Light District is also a part of the Old Centre.

Canal Ring
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal Ring was dug in the 17th century to attract wealthy home owners. It is still a posh neighbourhood with many Dutch celebrities owning property. The Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are the city’s prime nightlife spots.

Jordaan
A traditional working class area gone upmarket with plenty of art galleries, hip boutiques and happening restaurants. Also includes the Haarlemmerbuurt and the Western Islands.

Plantage
Intended to be an extension of the Canal Ring, lack of demand made this into a leafy area with lots of greenery, botanical gardens and Artis Zoo. Also includes the Weesperbuurt and the Eastern Islands.

South
One of Amsterdam’s prime areas, a trip to the city is not complete without a visit to the Museum Quarter. You can chill in the Vondelpark with a bottle of wine, or go hunt for bargains at the Albert Cuyp Market. It is the most popular area for accommodation as rates are considerably cheaper than in the city centre.

West

A vast suburban area that can be divided in Old and New West. The Old West is a charming area built in the late 19th century. The New West was built after World War II and often catches newspaper headlines for crime; urban renewal is underway to improve living conditions in this area.

North

The North is a newly-built suburb that lies at the northern side of the IJ. Most visitors go to the area east of the motorway A10, a protected polder area that culturally belongs to the Waterland and Zaan Region. This traditional Dutch countryside is best explored by bicycle.

East

The East is a large and diverse residential area. The Eastern Docklands and IJburg stand out as relatively affluent neighbourhoods known for their modern architecture.

Bijlmer

An exclave of Amsterdam, the Bijlmer was foreseen as a neighbourhood of the future with large apartment blocks separated by tracts of green. It turned into a lower-class residential district home to people of over 150 nationalities, often associated with crime and robberies. Its safety record has improved remarkably the last years, but it still is mostly visited by adventurous travellers (and football fans).

Average minimum and maximum temperature over the year

Amsterdam can best be visited in spring (May and June) or summer (July, August and September).  The temperatures are mild in spring and can be warm in summer. You always have a chance of seeing rain in Amsterdam.

What’s the best time to travel to  Amsterdam in Netherlands? Here are some facts:

  • The months July and August have a nice average temperature.
  • On average, the warmest month is August.
  • On average, the coolest month is January.
  • November is the wettest month.
  • April is the driest month.

Caffè Toscanini
In 1985 Caffè Toscanini started as a tiny Italian restaurant in Goudsbloemstraat in the Jordaan, a typical quarter of Amsterdam. Soon it became known for its authentic Italian dishes, which were prepared with great care and served in a homely and relaxed atmosphere.

Unfailingly and with great love for the original Italian art of cooking food is prepared. Home-made Italian bread comes out of Toscanini’s own bakery. The fresh pastas are home-made. All ingredients used are chosen with the utmost care and whenever possible biological products are used. Supperclub

The Supperclub in the centre of Amsterdam, one of the hotspots of the city for a great lounge and dinner combination.

Evening in Amsterdam. Eight p.m. You want to go out, really out. But what is really out in Amsterdam? And, by the way, what is really “in” these days?

You’ve seen it all. Heard it all. Done it all. At least, that’s what you think. Until you go through the monumental doors of the Supperclub. From that amazing moment on, you’re lost in a most pleasant kind of wonder.

This curious scene that constantly makes you wonder what will happen next. Because every night is different at Supperclub. Every night is new. And every new and different night you’re “in” for an exciting culinary and cultural adventure.

The restaurant is first and foremost a…restaurant. It offers ample space to more than 150 dinner guests. For many people it is the place of choice when they have only one thing in mind: splendid food.

Le Garage

As the name suggests, restaurant “Le Garage” used to be a garage.
The parallel becomes more obvious when we realize that a restaurant is essentially a place where people come to be repaired – or restored.
“You enter tired and exhausted by the drag of daily life, but you leave refreshed and uplifted”, that is the trade of the restaurateur. A human skill that involves observing, feeling and smiling.

People should enjoy being with you. We, of “Le Garage” are trying to make a difference by offering such a welcome, supported by culinary craftmanship, wine advice and atmosphere.
On April 1st 1990, the interior designed by our friend and regular designer Cees Dam (amongst other things known from the ‘Muziektheater’) was opened with a grandiose party, which was attended by a thousand guests. Still, the restaurant is a “hot place” frequented by artists, TV stars, advertisement heavyweights, sports idols and everyday guests. The place is very much sought after: it can still be hard to get a table.
Seeing and being seen, along with tasty dishes and cheerful wines, the recipe for an evening out.

The 9 streets

Between Leidsestraat and Raadhuisstraat there is an area known as De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets), named after the nine side streets connecting the main canals. Together they constitute a charming neighbourhood full of unique shops, wonderful places to have lunch and a great atmosphere.

Trendsetting fashion

If you decide to shop in the 9 Straatjes, chances are you’ll end up with something really unusual. In Huidenstraat, for example, Donna Fiera sells clothes for women who are not afraid of attracting attention; a shop full of feminine labels that you’ll have difficulty finding elsewhere. Next door is Goods, boasting a large collection of affordable women’s and men’s clothes of labels such as Fornarina, G-sus and FCUK.

If you’re looking for trendy vintage, you’re bound to find something to your liking across the road at Zipper. Other good second-hand clothing shop is Laura Dols in Wolvenstraat which specialises in 1950′s styles.

Fashion fans will be delighted by what they’ll find at Van Ravenstein at the corner of Keizersgracht and Huidenstraat. This shop sells mostly creations by Belgian designers such as Dries van Noten, Martin Margiela, Dirk Bikkembergs and Ann Demeulemeester. Cool but classical is the clothing of the Italian fashion designer Daniele Alessandrini in Hartenstraat. Shoe freaks should meanwhile head straight for trendsetter Antonia in Gasthuismolensteeg.

leidseplein amsterdam
The Leidseplein is a square in central Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Lying in the southwest of the Grachtengordel district of Amsterdam, the Leidseplein is immediately northeast of the Singelgracht canal. It is situated on the crossroads of the Weteringschans, the Marnixstraat, and the Leidsestraat. The Leidsestraat was originally named for being the road to Leiden.

The Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. Historically, the square was the end of the road from Leinden, and served as a parking lot for horse-drawn traffic. Today, modern traffic travels through the square and side streets are packed with restaurants and nightclubs. dam square amsterdam
Dam Square lies in the historical center of Amsterdam, approximately 750 meters south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station. It is roughly rectangular in shape, stretching about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south. It links the streets Damrak and Rokin, which run along the original course of the Amstel River from Centraal Station to Muntplein (Mint Square) and Munttoren. The Dam also marks the endpoint of other well-traveled streets, Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat. A short distance beyond the northeast corner lies the main red-light district, de Wallen.

On the west end of the square is the neoclassical Royal Palace, which served as the city hall from 1655 until its conversion to a royal residence in 1808. Beside it are the 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. The National Monument, a white stone pillar designed by J.J.P. Oud and erected in 1956 to memorialize the victims of World War II, dominates the opposite side of the square. Also overlooking the plaza are the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and the upscale department store De Bijenkorf. These various attractions have turned the Dam into a tourist zone. The square abounds with city pigeons, popular for birdfeeding.

rembrandt-plein
Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square) is a major square in central Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is named after the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn.

The square used to be a butter market but developed into a centre for nightlife with the opening of various hotels and cafés. There are bars chock-a-block with people singing along to Dutch folk songs at the top of their voices, and a few large clubs. This makes it very popular with tourists as well.

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam  is a museum for classic modern art, contemporary art and design in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It is housed on Museum Square next to the Van Gogh Museum and close to both the Rijksmuseum and the Concertgebouw. The original municipal museum was founded in 1874, but developed into the present museum after a 1909 decision of the city to collect contemporary art and accept donations of work made by artists of international acclaim, Georges Braque and Wassily Kandinsky being among the first to enter the museum from outside the Netherlands. Its original light red brick, Neo-Renaissance style building of 1895, designed by city architect Adriaan Willem Weissman, was painted white on the inside in 1938 by its director Willem Sandberg and is currently being renovated and enlarged with a new extension and utilities building. The museum has announced to reopen on September 23, 2012.

The historical house
The museum is located in 17th C. patrician house overlooking the Herengracht canal. It’s width certifies to its splendour – 16 meters or 52 feet, which at the time meant almost extravagance, because of the cost of the building terrain. Most of the townhouses were built tall and narrow, on a small but deep parcel. The house interiors, with its beautiful wall paintings and authentic floors, were partly preserved, so you may see today how centuries ago these houses looked like inside.

Designed for the rich merchant Karel Gerards by then famous architect, Phillips Vingboons, who lived in the years 1607-1678, the house has been completed in 1667. It was later owned by several important bankers and business people, therefore its walls must have witnessed many important historical transactions. For example – it is here, that Dutch loans given by the Amsterdam banker Jan Willink to the government of the United States in the 18th C., were signed. The Netherlands has been at that time one of the few world’s republics (Republic of Venice was another) and effectively supported United States during its War of Independence with the Kingdom of Great Britain.

The exhibit in this house overlooking the Herengracht canal, was an initiative of one man – Dutch industrialist, now in his 60-ties, who in 2009 purchased the residence and transformed into the museum. Today, Het Grachtenhuis is run by a foundation

The exhibit The Canal House show explains the situation in Amsterdam before the construction of the 17th C. canal ring area called in Dutch ‘grachtengordel’ – Amsterdam Belt Area, and tells the story of its construction. Digging of the city three main canals – Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, creation of tens of smaller cross canals, partition of building lots, as well as construction of the new fast growing city, was not easy on wet and muddy land of the area. Today, the truly unique, registered by the UNESCO as the World Heritage monument, Amsterdam Belt Area may be still admired, almost unchanged.

The visit to Het Grachtenhuis, which takes less than an hour, gives you another point of view on the Amsterdam history. Wonderful miniature model of the canal house, very much in the tradition of the Dutch Golden Age dolls house but enriched with multimedia wonders, and the big urban model of the canal ring area, are the highlights of the show. Seeing it makes you better understand not only the history of the Amsterdam canal area, but also the social make up of the city, its traditions and its spirit.
