Abu Dhabi  is the federal capital and center of government in the United Arab Emirates. It is the largest city of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and one of the most modern cities in the world.

With a population of just under 1.5 million, Abu Dhabi is the headquarters of numerous oil companies and embassies. With only 420,000 citizens in the entire emirate, each has an average net worth of $17 million. The city features large gardens and parks, green boulevards lining all the streets and roads, sophisticated high-rise buildings, international luxury hotel chains and opulent shopping malls.

Long viewed as a staid bureaucratic outpost entirely lacking in neighboring Dubai’s pizazz, things started to change radically in 2004 after long-ruler Sheikh Zayed passed away and his son Sheikh Khalifa took over. In a bid to attract tourism and investment, land sales to foreigners were allowed and restrictions on alcohol were loosened.

Several massive projects are also under way. Yas Island hosts Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 track and the new Ferrari theme park, while the upcoming $28 billion cultural zone of Saadiyat Island and its centerpieces the Guggenheim and Louvre Museums are scheduled to open in 2013. It remains to be seen how well the strategy will work but the city is certainly experiencing a construction boom.

The core of Abu Dhabi is a wedge-shaped island connected to the mainland by the Maqta and Musaffah bridges. The wide end of the wedge forms the city center, with the Corniche running along the coast and a road variously known as Airport Rd or Sheikh Rasheed bin Saeed al Maktoum St running lengthwise out to the bridges.

The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is from November to February when it is cool to cold and one can really make the best of the outdoors with leisurely strolls within and around the island. The temperature during this period usually ranges from 9 to 25 degrees centigrade. Warm clothes such as a jacket or shawl are useful as it is quite breezy. Overcoats, jackets, boots and pullovers are common sights during this period.  The malls are full of autumn-winter collections.

October, March and April are the best months for beaches when it is not too hot to be outside. From November to April also sees Abu Dhabi roadsides and parks with colorful flowers.

On the beach, a normal bathing suit or bikini is fine, but avoid ‘thong’ bikini bottoms or topless sunbathing as this is considered indecent.

Hakkasan Abu Dhabi

Hakkasan Abu Dhabi opened in June 2010, bringing Hakkasan’s award-winning cuisine and décor to the landmark Emirates Palace. Comprising a restaurant, bar and lounge as well as four private dining rooms, the 16,000 sq ft space is separated by carved wooden screens and latticing that echo the luxurious interior of the London flagship restaurant.

Long-time design partner Gilles & Boissier, based in Paris, designed the space with the Hakkasan ethos of the modern ethnic, interpreting it for the United Arab Emirates. Embroidered-finished furniture and marbled Chinese forms enrich the space, and the main dining area is crafted into a wooden, cage-like structure surrounded by stunning blue glass and back-lit by a stainless steel frame.

Hakkasan’s signature dishes like Peking duck with caviar and grilled Wagyu beef with king soy sauce are served alongside a set of new dishes created especially for an Emirate clientele. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

This architectural work of art is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 41,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world’s largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tonnes. The mosque’s first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.

Reflective pools surround the mosque, amplifying its beauty. The striking white and gold colours shining in the sun are transformed at night by a unique lightning system which reflects the phases of the moon.

Visitors’ Tip: Why not finish sight-seeing or shopping for the day and take the 5pm ‘Sunset Tour’? Get to the mosque around 4:30pm – a wonderful time to take photos – to wind down and chill out for 20 minutes in the lovely, afternoon breeze before the tour.

Opening hours: Unlike other mosques in Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open daily to visitors, except on Friday morning, which is for worshippers only. Complimentary one hour guided tours run (Sun-Thurs) at 10am, 11am and 4.30 / 5pm. Friday times are 5pm and 7.30 /8pm and Saturday 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4.30 /5pm and 7.30 / 8pm.

Arabian Nights Heritage Village

On a dedicated Al Khatem plot in Al Ain, deep in Abu Dhabi’s heritage heartland, the Arabian Nights Heritage Village harnesses the soul and essence of old Arabia.

Conceived to give visitors a chance to experience the mythical and timeless beauty of the desert and traditional Emirati life, the Arabian Nights Heritage Village is not a hotel, but by no means a rustic camp.

Although internet is available for emergencies, there are no televisions on-site, inviting the guests to enjoy an authentic, serene experience. The Heritage Villages utilises the area’s natural resources, with a specialist water treatment facility extracting and treating water on-site. Drinking water comes from a 65 metre deep well. The village also uses treated waste water to irrigate trees and its landscaped gardens.

The site is powered by four sound-proofed generators and there are three types of room available, Beit Al Barr, traditional mud houses of the desert, Beit Al Bahr, the original houses of Emirati sea-dwellers which are made from palm fronds, and Beit Shaar, or woven tents.

There is also an idyllic 200m² swimming pool – the ideal place to cool down after a spot of dune bashing, quad biking, sand surfing or falconry.

Helicopter tours

Sand boarding & skiing

Skiing takes on a whole new meaning on Abu Dhabi’s desert dunes. Boasting the world’s largest dunes in, towering hundreds of metres above the surrounding plains, the Liwa Oasis on the edges of the Rub al-Khali or Empty Quarter is a sand skier’s paradise. So strap on your sand board and sashay down the seemingly endless red sand slopes for an exhilarating experience. For novice skiers, daunted by the 300 metre Liwa dunes, skiing down gentler slopes that stretch across the Abu Dhabi desert may be the place to start this daring adventure.

A word of caution though: desert temperatures will be quite high during the day, so aim for the dunes in the early morning. Wear light clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the strong sun, and don’t forget to use plenty of sunscreen.

Designed exclusively for all our smaller guests, the kids splash pool is a safe and fun environment for children. Located close to the family swimming pool and the surf pool, you and your children can be have some fun, relax and enjoy everything Wadi Adventure has to offer, to its fullest.

An upgraded area overlooking the surf pool with VIP services available. The Al Ain Water VIP Zone is a great place to reserve with friends for a day of relaxation and pampering amongst all the adventure.

Directions

From Abu Dhabi: Follow the E22 from Abu Dhabi toward Al Ain. As you enter AL Ain, turn right at the 2nd roundabout. Continue to the 7th roundabout where Ain Al Fayda appears on your right. At this roundabout, turn left onto the driveway of Wadi Adventure.The journey should take approximately 1hr 45 mins.

Shopping

Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, perhaps because it’s so diverse: everything from ultra-modern malls with the latest brands, to small, souk-like outlets where you can buy traditional perfumes, handicrafts, spices and carpets.

You can spend thousands of dollars on a bejewelled designer watch, or pick up a basic timepiece in a supermarket. You can splash out on an ‘haute-couture’ designer outfit, or buy fabric and have a local tailor make up your very own creation for a bargain price. You can buy a treasured Arabian antique, or a technology busting super modern home entertainment system.

Prices are often excellent in comparison to those abroad, especially for carpets, textiles and gold. If you are a good bargainer, you can get even better deals.

Most shops open from around 10am to 10pm, and later on weekends. Although most malls work straight through, some independent shops close for an extended lunch break, usually from 1pm to 4pm. Hours usually change during Ramadan, with many shops closing for the afternoon and reopening from 7pm until midnight or even later.

Abu Dhabi is home to several reputable galleries featuring interesting exhibitions of local art and traditional Arabian artefacts. The Folklore Gallery on Khalidiya Street (+971 2 666 0361) is a great place to browse displays of local pottery and art, and has an excellent framing service. Hemisphere Design Studio & Gallery (Khalifa Street, +971 2 676 8614) is an independent gallery showcasing works by local artists. Gallery One, inside Qaryat Al Beri, has a range of beautiful photographs and artwork that can be printed onto canvas and mounted, or rolled up into a suitcase friendly tube (+971 2 558 1822).

Barakat Gallery (+971 2 690 8950)

specialises in ancient art with genuine antiquities from China, Egypt, the Near East, Africa, Greece and Rome. Based in Emirates Palace Hotel, items vary widely and include statues, jewellery, coins, necklaces and pottery

The funky Ghaf Art Gallery (+971 2 665 5332)

stages exhibitions showcasing local and also sometimes international artists, with new talent regularly exhibiting. The gallery is on Khaleej Al Arabi Street, near Khalidiyah Gardens in Abu Dhabi.

Salwa Zeidan Gallery (+971 2 666 9656)

in Khalidiya (Khaleej Al Arabi Street) serves as a contemporary art space for international and Middle Eastern artists and emerging talents. The gallery is open Sunday through Thursday from 9am to 7pm

Gold Souk

Gold jewellery is in abundant supply, whatever your taste. Gold is priced according to the international daily gold rate, and is available in 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats.

Shopping for gold is a fascinating activity, due to the wide range of styles available, from clean and classic western designs to opulent, ornate Arabian wedding jewellery.

You can also buy gold ingots in varying sizes, either for investment or to have moulded into your own design. In addition to the weight price, a small charge is added for craftsmanship, which varies according to the intricacy of design.

The Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre has many jewellers, including some of the Gulf’s largest. Apart from the souk, you’ll also find some big name jewellers in the shopping malls, such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany & Co. Regional jewellers to look out for include Damas, Pure Gold and Rivoli.

Modern souks

Part of the Shangri-la Hotel complex near Abu Dhabi’s Mangrove Village, The Souk Qaryat at Al Beri is a contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian market and home to local and international retail brands, coffee shops and a diverse range of restaurants. Abras (water taxis) take you around the souk via meandering manmade canals, and the stunning waterside complex offers alfresco dining in beautiful architectural surroundings.

The Souk at Central Market  is a must visit destination for residents and tourists. Take a trip to Abu Dhabi’s Al Markaziyah district and explore a variety traditional and regional products ranging from jewellery, carpets, antiques to traditional tailoring, fashion and diverse restaurants.
